Concrete in the Canadian Cold
For several concrete construction companies and ready-mix producers in Canada, colder temperatures are approaching. This effects the different procedures and standards that are required in concrete construction. During this time concrete gains strength more slowly. Thus, it is important to closely monitor the concrete temperature and take appropriate precautions and measures to avoid structural failure and maintain its quality.
If the concrete is mishandled, the following problems can occur: lack of required strength, rapid temperature changes, inadequate protection of the structure and its serviceability, and improper curing procedures.
These problems can be avoided during the curing stages by protecting concrete from freezing and by making sure minimal amount of moisture is introduced unless in a heated enclosure.
It is the responsibility of the site manager to decide whether operating during cold weather will be possible without any issues or if it is better to wait for warmer temperatures to guarantee the quality of the work being produced.
